Pillow Talk

[Lying in the dark between Mommy & Daddy in our bed...]

Anna: [pointing out the window] Look! Airplane!

Mommy: Yes, baby. That is an airplane. You're very smart.

Daddy: Anna rode in an airplane when she was little. Do you remember?

Anna: I ride choo choo.

Mommy: Yeah, angel. You rode a choo choo with Mommy.

Mommy: I love you, Anna.

Anna: I love you too, Mommy.

Mommy: Okay, no more talking now. It's time to go night night.

[Silence]
Daddy: I love you, Anna.

Anna: No more talking.

Since WHEN does she listen to me?!

And just so you know...she did eventually tell her Daddy that she loved him too before drifting off to dreamland :)

Old Friends

I have a friend named Allison. We met as freshmen in high school on the dance team and were roommates through most of our college years. Unfortunately, we now live roughly 1,000 miles apart, so we don't get to see each other even close to as often as we would like. Luckily, we both found ourselves back “home” in Baton Rouge this weekend and were able to catch up a little. It was wonderful, but I have to say… why is it that even though you would think that spending time with old friends would make you miss them less, it actually winds up having the opposite effect?

Oddly (and awesomely) enough, Anna and Allison’s son Dylan share the same birthday. We all sweated it out at the Baton Rouge Zoo for a few hours today, and despite the sweltering heat and humidity, it was so much fun to get to see the two of them interact. Dylan was the stereotypical rough-and-tough, catch-me-if-you-can boy, and Anna was more than happy to flit around, delightfully chasing him. She constantly wanted to hold his hand, and if he got out of sight would keep saying “Where Dylan go?” over and over again until she found him. It was hard not to have just a teeny tiny little pang of sadness thinking about how nice it would be if they could grow up together, but they were so darn cute that being sad was just not an option!

My camera is out of commission due to an unfortunate incident this weekend where Anna pulled the diaper bag (with the camera in it!) off of a table. Allison took some pictures with her camera of the kiddos together at the zoo, so I’ll update this post with more pics once she gets the chance to send some to me (No pressure, Alli!)

It was so refreshing getting to see you guys and spend some leisurely time together. I hope the next time isn't so far away. . .

Deep Thoughts

Looking at one of Anna's old baby pictures...

Daddy: Do you know who that is?

Anna: That Anna.

Mommy: Can you give Anna kisses?

Anna: [Kisses picture.]

Daddy: Hey, is that Anna pretty?

Anna: No, that Anna Fernandez!

Out of My Head

Ever since I was a little girl, I've always had a love affair with dancing. It's been a very long time since I've danced, but there's still something about the way I feel when I even just watch other people dance that I can't quite put into words.

Tonight after I put Anna to bed, I watched tonight's episode of So You Think You Can Dance on my trusty DVR. Tyce DiOrio's contemporary piece to "This Woman's Work" was easily the standout of the evening. It's about a woman fighting breast cancer and the friend that helps her through her struggle, and it was so incredibly moving. Everyone on the panel was in tears, and I have no doubt that most people at home were too. I was.

The only disappointment for me tonight was seeing Mia Michaels on the panel. Not because I don't like what she has to say, because I do. But if Mia Michaels is on the panel, that means that none of her choreography will be in the episode, and no choreographer is able to move me quite like Mia Michaels. This woman could literally come up with a way to choreograph picking your toes that would no doubt be nothing less than riveting. I am convinced.

No matter how hard I try, I just cannot get Mia's piece from two weeks ago to "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles out of my head! It's about addiction, and it was just so unbelievably, beautifully, perfectly emotional and haunting that I just can't stop thinking about it. So I found it online so that I could watch it again (and again and again), and now it's here for you to watch too. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Then, if you're a contemporary junkie like I am and like dancing that makes you feel something, check out this piece from last week that Travis Wall choreographed to "If It Kills Me" by Jason Mraz. It's lovely, and not as heavy as the other two, so a good note to end on.

Sweet [Suspicious] Silence

Anna had a doctor appointment yesterday, so she stayed home with me while I worked from home. It's always a challenge to keep her entertained so that I can get work done, but miraculously she played very quietly in her playroom while I got through my morning conference calls.

It's important to note that I was in the same room. Only my back was turned, my eyes were on the computer, and I had a headset on my head. She was quiet, and me? I was deliriously happy.

Until...
Mommy's going to be a little quicker on the uptake next time, so watch out munchkin!

About This Blog

I'm a mother, a wife, and a business systems analyst for a major technology company. Some days I'm good at all three, some days I suck at them all. Between diapers, laundry and late night conference calls, it's all just part of the fun of being a working mom. This blog will share some of my thoughts and adventures in sleep-deprivation. Enjoy, and please do leave comments so I'll know you were here!
